New Options for Education after COVID-19: Implementation of Online Teaching and Learning

Tokyo Tech started full-fledged online instruction in April 2020 as part of special measures against COVID-19. This change compelled us to review teaching and learning methods, campus life, and the significance of university education itself. We are facing one of the most significant shifts Tokyo Tech has experienced over the past century.

Before the COVDI-19 pandemic, teaching and learning at Tokyo Tech was essentially done face-to-face on campus. While this remains fundamental, we need to develop online options based on our experience during the pandemic, in order to accommodate the various learning styles of our students. This complements the idea that “Tokyo Tech is dedicated to cultivating talent by introducing its students to world-class research and providing them with the education that promotes their ability to learn and think for themselves” as stated in Tokyo Tech’s educational goals. More students will be able to engage in self-directed learning by taking advantage of an online environment that is independent of time or location.

Based on the above, we have drawn up a plan for implementing online learning for the enhancement of education provided at Tokyo Tech after COVID-19.
